Central Oregon Scramble

The Central Oregon Scramble crowned it's first championship team. Tony Battistella, Lance Gilmore and Alan Koster combined to shoot rounds of 62 and 61 for their winning 123 total in the three man scramble format. Birdies were hard to come by as the golf course bared it's teeth on a cool June week-end. Steve Erdmann teamed with son's, Benji and Stephen to take the low net title at 117. In the second flight, Dan Pearson, Chris Surgeon and Paul Surgeon shot fine rounds of 63 and 66 for their winning 129 total. Mark Jones, Gene Pringle and Josh Wood produced the low net score in the second flight at 117.

The field of 32 teams seemed to enjoy this new event that replaced the Central Oregon Amateur. There were several father-son combinations playing on this father's day weekend. The intention is to make this an annual event on Father's Day week-end. The scramble format seems to be a popular choice with the lurking danger of the Central Oregon desert rough. US Open Day Winners!

The US Open Day at Juniper Golf Club went off without a hitch (Eat your heart out Bethpage Black) on a warm and sunny Central Oregon Day. Ninety players braved the back tees and tough pin positions for a tiny feel of what the tour players go through playing in a US Open. Andrew Fitch and Chris Nutwell shot fine rounds of 74 to tie for low gross. Congratulations to all who gave it a go. Check here for complete results!

June Web Specials!

Our May Web Specials were so popular, we are carrying them over for another month. The first special is $30 Monday. For all Mondays is June, the green fee will be $30 for each player that presents the appropriate coupon. The Tuesday special is "Two for Tuesday". For each Tuesday, we offer two players to pay the green fee of one, and both get to play. Sorry, not good for single players. Two Players=One Green Fee. The Wednesday Special is "Free Cart Wednesday". For each player that pays the regular daily green fee, we will furnish the use of a power cart for their round. All cart drivers must be 18 years of age or older.

Junior Golf at Juniper Golf Club

The 2009 junior golf program will start on June 22. Registration for members is available starting June 1. Registration for the public will be held on Monday, June 15th at 9 AM. Juniors will meet on Mondays and Wednesdays through out the summer. Group times will be noon, 1:30 PM, 3 PM and 4:30 PM. For complete details, see the 2009 Junior Golf Flyer. Eagle for Rago.

Chuck Rago. Hole #11. Three wood off the tee. Wedge into the hole. Yes folks, that is an eagle two. Congratulations to Chuck. You have had a pretty good year in golf for 2008. Now if you would just catch some fish!
Tom DeHart Captures KP with Ace!
George Owens' tee shot on #16 lipped out and disappeared behind the hole, 1/2 inch from an ace. Two groups later comes Tom DeHart. Tom knocks the ball in the hole and George's KP is gone. Congratulations to Tom DeHart for making his second hole-in-one. Tom's 4 iron shot from 178 yards on the 16th hole at Juniper was his second ace in 55 years of playing golf. His first was just last year. Nice shot George but it's just not the same as an ace. Congratulation to Tom DeHart!
After 38 years, An Ace for Lois Northrup!
Lois Northrup took advantage of her participation in the club championships by making her first hole-n-one in 38 years of playing golf. Lois knocked her 7 iron shot on #16 from 139 yards right into the hole. The roar was heard across the golf course and at the clubhouse. A diner asked, "What's going on out there?" Gosh this golf stuff is exciting.

One Ball Rule

     Several people have asked about having to play the same make of golf ball during a round of golf. The USGA rules allow you to use any ball on it's approved ball list whenever substitution is allowed (between holes, when ball is damaged, etc). Some events, like PGA Tour events, use what is called "The One Ball Rule". This rule does NOT apply unless the tournament committee imposes this one ball rule in it's local rules or conditions of the competition.

     In the back of the USGA Rule Book, in Appendix I, the USGA suggests and writes that during a stipulated round, the balls a player plays must be of the same brand and model as detailed by a single entry on the List of Conforming Golf Balls. (Here is the link to the List of Conforming Golf Balls. It changes occasionally.) That means if you play a PRO V1x for your first shot, you must play a PRO V1x for every shot of your stipulated round.

     This "One Ball Rule" is usually just used for competitions with advanced players but the committee could do it for any event. It must be listed in the local rules for the competition. Otherwise, if you start with a Titleist, you could switch to a Callaway, Nike or any ball of your choice when the rules allow you to substitute a ball (like between holes).

Amended to allow a player to lift his ball for identification in a hazard (see corresponding change to Rule 15-3, removing the exemption from penalty for playing a wrong ball in a hazard).
